I suppose everybody has seen the story: “Tom Brady endorses Trump.”
No way. Our Tom Brady?
I’m aware that a lot of professional athletes, like other wealthy people, are of the Republican persuasion. But Trump? Seriously?
This throws me into moral confusion. I’ve been enjoying this season, with its backstory of the inflategate thing and the deflation of Goodell, thinking it would be the greatest Super Bowl victory ever if they could pull it off, emerging from the morass of suspicions, investigations (not to mention overcoming the loss of Wilfork) for final vindication.
I have wanted the football gods to smile down upon this strange version of an underdog (the most hated team in sports). And they have so far seemed to be doing just that. But now, will there not be a part of me seeing Brady as soiled, not by inflategate but by his association with Trump—supposedly he even plays golf with him!— and rooting for him to fumble, be sacked, for his passes to go awry?
It’s enough to make you want to find a QB to root for who has less reprehensible taste in candidates. Aaron Rodgers, for instance, devout Christian though he is, for his support of the Scott Walker recall.
On the other hand, Brady’s wife, the supermodel Gisele, is, I’ve learned, considered an environmental liberal and, although a Catholic, a critic of the Church’s anti-abortion stance. And Belichick is reportedly a democrat. Maybe they can talk sense to him.
